Dosimetry developer Sicel Technologies of Morrisville, NC, has won a contract with a Tennessee medical center for the company's Dose Verification System (DVS) for breast cancer patients.
Maury Regional Medical Cancer Center in Columbia has begun using the devices, which are as small as the length of a dime and can be inserted in the tumor bed in less than 15 minutes.
After radiation treatment, the DVS device provides radiation oncologists with a measurement of the actual amount of radiation hitting the target where the malignant tumor has been removed, Sicel said. The information is transmitted to a handheld monitor.
