ASTRO updates booklet for cancer patients

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in Fairfax, VA, has published an updated edition of "Radiation Therapy for Cancer," a 24-page booklet that provides information for cancer patients and their families who are considering or planning to have radiation therapy.

The booklet provides information about various types of radiation therapy techniques. It also explains the types of external-beam radiation therapy treatments that may be recommended to a cancer patient, including 3D conformal, intensity-modulated, image-guided, and stereotactic body procedures, as well as proton therapy and neutron beam therapy.

The ASTRO booklet also provides generic information about clinical trials and a list of questions that patients may want to ask their doctors.

Since its last update in 2003, ASTRO has distributed more than 650,000 copies of the booklet, which is free to patients and caregivers upon request to [email protected]. The booklet is also available for downloading at www.rtanswers.org.
