Swedish oncology firm Elekta of Stockholm has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its Extend program for the Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion radiation therapy system.
Extend is a stereotactic treatment program designed to let clinicians apply gamma knife surgery technology to a broader class of targets, including certain cancers of the head and neck. Extend also features a relocatable frame and support for fractionated treatments.
Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion aids in the treatment of multiple brain metastases, reducing damage to healthy tissue and allowing for concomitant chemotherapy for primary tumor control.
Elekta plans to show Extend and its other products at the 2009 Congress of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting, which begins in New Orleans on October 24.
