Dosimetry developer Sicel Technologies of Morrisville, NC, has been awarded a contract for its Dose Verification System (DVS) Smart Marker from the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver.
The wireless implantable device is designed to report actual radiation dose to tumor and surrounding tissue following each treatment session and to function as a treatment verification system. Described as a thin capsule the length of a dime, it can be placed using minimally invasive techniques for prostate monitoring and at the time of surgery for breast cancer patients, according to Sicel.
The goal of radiation treatment monitored by the system is to provide maximal dose to the tumor while sparing normal surrounding tissues.
