Xoft adds Axxent installs

Brachytherapy device developer Xoft has installed its Axxent electronic brachytherapy system at several luminary sites in the U.S.

The new installations include the University of California, Los Angeles and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Beth Israel Medical Center, both in New York City.

Axxent is designed to deliver electronic therapy using a miniaturized x-ray source rather than radioactive isotopes directly to cancer sites with minimal radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue according to the Sunnyvale, CA-based company.

The system is used in the treatment of early-stage breast cancer, and endometrial and skin cancer, and has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in treating other cancers and conditions where radiation therapy is indicated, including intraoperative treatment.
