Rhino gets brachytherapy

A 40-year-old Indian rhinoceros at the Los Angeles Zoo was successfully treated with brachytherapy, according to brachytherapy device developer Xoft of Sunnyvale, CA, whose system was used in the procedure.

Xoft's Axxent device was used to treat Randa for a case of recurrent squamous cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, under her horn. Treatments were delivered within Randa's habitat in two fractions, and zoo veterinarians judged the treatment a success.
