Electromagnetic localization technology developer Calypso Medical Technologies of Seattle and oncology firm Elekta of Stockholm have agreed to jointly develop products integrating Calypso's patient positioning system with Elekta's radiation therapy treatment technologies.
Near-term development efforts include creating connectivity between the Elekta linear accelerator and the Calypso system for patient positioning during radiation delivery; this automates the process of repositioning the treatment couch when the tumor moves out of a prescribed motion threshold.
The agreement also is designed to include the potential development of real-time automated correction. Feasibility work that is already under way at both companies could enable motion management with the tumor target based on real-time tracking data provided by the Calypso system.
