Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for a new proton therapy system.
Marketed under the ProBeam brand, the system can deliver intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) using pencil-beam scanning technology, according to the Palo Alto, CA-based vendor.
Varian said it has been selected as the preferred supplier for several proton therapy projects, including the Scripps Proton Therapy Center under construction in San Diego. In addition, the system has been selected for centers planned in Maryland, Italy, and other locations in the U.S. and Europe, the company said.
