Accuray to buy Morphormics for $5.7M

Radiation oncology firm Accuray has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Morphormics for approximately $5.7 million.

The privately held company founded by faculty at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill develops medical imaging software systems designed to automatically recognize and extract anatomical structures from medical images.

In 2008, Accuray began licensing Morphormics' autocontouring technology, which identifies and draws boundaries of the prostate and surrounding structures to enable treatment planning software to focus radiation on the prostate and minimize radiation to surrounding structures.

With the acquisition, Accuray plans to extend autocontouring capabilities to its CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery and TomoTherapy systems.
