Proton radiation therapy could successfully treat liver metastases, according to preliminary results from a phase I study.
The study is underway at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA. It's being conducted at the facility's James M. Slater Proton Treatment and Research Center.
Proton therapy is capable of delivering higher doses than have previously been used with conventional x-ray therapy, according to the institution. Initial results of the study have been promising, with patients showing significant tumor reduction without adverse side effects.
The study is currently enrolling qualified patients.
