Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems unveiled its HyperArc high-definition radiation therapy system at this week's American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting in Boston.
HyperArc uses noncoplanar treatment strategies and is designed to automate and simplify treatments such as stereotactic radiosurgery, according to the vendor. With HyperArc, clinicians should be able to deliver more compact radiation doses that closely conform to the size, shape, and location of tumors while sparing more surrounding healthy tissue, the firm said.
HyperArc is designed to use Varian's TrueBeam and Edge treatment platforms, including the PerfectPitch couch. Currently pending U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance, HyperArc is a work-in-progress and is being developed to do virtual dry runs, according to the company.
Varian hopes to make HyperArc clinically available beginning in 2017. First-generation HyperArc units will focus on radiosurgical treatment of brain metastases, with subsequent systems being developed for other treatments throughout the body, Varian said.
