Researchers from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) have used medical isotope developer IsoRay's Blu Build isotope cesium-131 brachytherapy delivery device to facilitate prostate cancer surgery.
Blu Build is a single-use, disposable device that allows physicians to individually tailor the placement of cesium-131 brachytherapy seeds based on a patient's anatomy, IsoRay said.
At MUSC, physicians use the device to deliver a high dose of radiation directly to a patient's targeted prostate cancer, limiting radiation exposure to surrounding organs, according to Dr. David Marshall, medical director of the Clinical Trials Office at the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center. They have successfully performed 13 prostate cancer surgeries using the method so far.
