Dear AuntMinnie Member,
Shear-wave elastography (SWE) is a relatively new ultrasound technique that's finding favor in a variety of new applications. We offer a look at the use of SWE for imaging Achilles tendinopathy in a new article in our Ultrasound Community.
Researchers from the University of Wisconsin wanted to see if SWE would be a good tool for detecting serious cases of Achilles tendinopathy by measuring the different ways in which a tendinopathic tendon responded to SWE compared to the contralateral tendon.
They found several characteristics that are typical of the appearance of Achilles tendinopathy on shear-wave elastography scans. Find out what they are by clicking here, or visit our Ultrasound Community at ultrasound.auntminnie.com.
Lung-RADS 4X
The American College of Radiology's Lung CT Screening Reporting and Data System (Lung-RADS) has become a useful tool for reporting CT lung cancer screening studies. The recent addition of a 4X category for suspicious lesions promises to make it even more useful.
The 4X category applies to nodules that are believed to be highly suspicious for lung cancer. Researchers from the Netherlands applied the category to subsolid nodules detected during the National Lung Screening Trial that previously would have been classified as Lung-RADS category 3 or higher.
They found that using the 4X descriptor added significant value to nodule classification, with malignancy rates of 46% to 57% depending on the radiologist interpreting the studies. Learn more by clicking here, or visit our CT Community at ct.auntminnie.com.
PET guides Alzheimer's treatment
Finally, visit our Molecular Imaging Community at molecular.auntminnie.com to learn about a study in which PET is being used to assess treatment with an investigational therapeutic agent designed to help the brain rid itself of excess amyloid protein, which has been linked to Alzheimer's disease.
