Dear AuntMinnie Member,
Is the job market for radiologists -- down in the dumps for so many years -- finally showing signs of life?
That's the tantalizing implication of a new article we're featuring in our Imaging Leaders Community. The story describes a study by researchers from the American College of Radiology (ACR), who found that there will be 16% more new jobs available for radiologists this year compared to last year.
What's driving the rebound? The ACR researchers believe a major factor is the retirement of older radiologists -- a trend that will only gain steam in coming years. In fact, there could be a shortage of radiologists in the future, which would be a surprising development considering how depressed the job market has been.

Good news for synthetic 2D mammo
Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has been taking the mammography world by storm over the past few years. But the technology has one glaring weakness, in particular when it comes to screening: the need for a separate 2D acquisition.
That requirement may be fading away with the publication of new results indicating that DBT with synthetic 2D mammography -- which involves creating a 2D image from DBT data -- works just as well for screening as the combination of DBT and a conventional digital mammogram.
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania found that DBT plus synthetic 2D mammography not only had equivalent sensitivity and cancer detection rates compared with DBT and conventional mammography, but it also had lower recall rates. Most importantly, use of the synthetic technique cut radiation dose by 39%.
