An ongoing review of thousands of mammograms at a Canadian health system has found nine cases in which there might be a "possible discrepancy or differing opinion."

In a September 6 statement, Central Health said that the nine cases were discovered in a review of over 2,500 cases so far. Just over 500 cases remain to be reviewed.

The review was started when the health system revealed that as many as three years of breast screening exams were reviewed on three-megapixel monitors rather than the five-megapixel monitors recommended by clinical guidelines. Central Health commissioned an independent radiologist to review the cases in question.

"The number of potential discrepancies or differing opinions identified to date in our review remains low, suggesting the occurrence presents a low risk to patients," Central Health noted in the statement.
