Dear AuntMinnie Member,
Computed radiography (CR) cassettes and imaging plates suffer from a surprising number of image artifacts and should be monitored closely as part of a quality assurance program, Canadian researchers report in a study published this month.
The researchers studied CR imaging plates from three major manufacturers after getting reports of image artifacts following the installation of new CR readers, according to an article by staff writer Wayne Forrest that we're featuring in our Digital X-Ray Community.
The group noted both exterior damage to CR cassettes, as well as changes to the imaging plate itself, that could have an impact on radiographic images. While some of the damage was from normal wear and tear, the group believes that some of the degradation was due to design flaws in the imaging plates and cassettes. In another featured article, by staff writer Erik L. Ridley, a team from Italy assessed the impact of RIS and PACS on x-ray exam completion times. Perhaps not surprisingly, the group found that the implementation of digital image management can significantly speed up a department's radiography workflow.
