ABUS gets approval for dense breasts; Image Gently expands to x-ray; RADExpo on Thursday

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

As we go to press, we just received news that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of an automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) scanner as an adjunct to mammography for screening women with dense breast tissue.

The FDA signed off on the premarket approval application filed by U-Systems for the technology. The move will give breast imagers another tool for screening women with dense breast tissue, which has presented difficulties to standard x-ray mammography. Image Gently expands to x-ray

Since it launched several years ago, the Image Gently campaign has made huge strides in raising awareness about CT radiation dose in pediatric imaging. Now, the campaign is setting its sights on radiology's most widely used modality, x-ray.

The Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging today announced the expansion of Image Gently to cover digital x-ray, encompassing both digital radiography (DR) and computed radiography (CR). Called Back to Basics, the campaign includes educational material designed to help radiology professionals reduce dose when performing imaging studies of children.

The campaign includes several important provisions, including the development of a single, standardized terminology to describe radiation dose, to replace the Babel of terms currently being used in digital x-ray. Learn more about the new campaign by clicking here.
