Week in Review: Coverage from ECR 2019 | Philips to buy Carestream HIT | Ethical AI

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

The European Congress of Radiology (ECR) wrapped up on Sunday, and one of our stories from the Vienna meeting was our most-read article of the week.

The article describes a discussion among European researchers at ECR 2019 on the multiple applications of virtual reality and augmented reality in radiology, including for resident training, patient education, and intraoperative guidance. Imaging data are being used to create 3D virtual models that students, residents, and patients can interact with using headsets.

A number of other articles and videos from ECR 2019 rounded out our top 10 for the week, such as a comparison of automated breast ultrasound with digital breast tomosynthesis, the use of a deep-learning algorithm to aid in neurological diagnoses, and an imaging analytics platform for optimizing MRI operations -- showing that artificial intelligence (AI) isn't just about image analysis.

AI was a major theme at the conference, and we captured some great conversations about it on camera, including a discussion of the clinical validation of AI and an exploration of the ethical considerations and challenges of AI.

We hope you enjoyed all our coverage from Vienna. For a complete review, please visit our RADCast @ ECR.

Philips to buy Carestream HIT

A major developing story in radiology broke on Thursday, when Royal Philips, the parent company of Philips Healthcare, announced its plans to buy the healthcare IT (HIT) business of Carestream Health.

The deal includes Carestream's PACS, diagnostic and enterprise viewing software, vendor-neutral archives, and other activities. It gives Philips a major boost in the radiology IT space, a market that has mostly experienced flat growth, according to analysts at market research firm Signify Research.

Ethical AI

Finally, be sure not to miss our article on a new draft statement from radiology societies in North America and Europe on the ethical use of AI. The document is designed to deal with a number of the challenges to AI and to foster trust that radiology AI will be used appropriately for patients. The story can be found in our Artificial Intelligence Community.
