Week in Review: Do hospitals still need radiology PACS? | 6 Steps to Radiology | ISMRM coverage coming soon

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

PACS may not be the red-hot topic it once was when radiology was in the midst of converting to digital imaging, but it still generates interest among AuntMinnie.com's membership. Indeed, articles on PACS occupied the top two spots on our list of most-read articles for the week of May 6. (And if you're keeping score, Herman Oosterwijk's article on the evolution of PACS was our top story for the week of April 22.)

Topping the list for this past week was Kyle Henson's thought-provoking piece on whether hospitals still need PACS for their radiology departments. Mr. Henson believes that with the arrival of enterprise imaging and the outsourcing of services to radiology groups, it may not be so critical for hospitals to use precious resources buying and maintaining their own PACS. Instead, they can simply leverage the investment the radiology group has already made.

Our second most popular article was from this week's American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) meeting, where researchers from Penn State Health discussed how they were able to improve the efficiency of their radiologists by making a simple tweak to how their PACS supports searches for prior studies.

6 Steps to Radiology

As the academic year draws to a close, we're starting to wrap up 6 Steps to Radiology, our series of articles for medical students who are interested in applying for radiology residency. In the fifth installment of the series, educators from the University of Cincinnati offer advice to third-year medical students, who are in a key phase in deciding what career paths they are going to pursue.

At this time, third-year medical students should be looking for an adviser who can help guide them through the process, and radiology residency program directors can be great resources, according to Drs. Eric England, Carl Flink, and Alisa Kanfi. The third year of medical school is also an important time to take full advantage of clerkships, they advise.

If you know any medical students who are interested in radiology, be sure to share this valuable resource with them.
