Week in Review: Fatal MRI scanner accident | Predatory radiology journals | What is the Best Radiology Image of 2021?

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Tragic news came this week from a hospital in Utah, where a worker was killed by a falling MRI scanner that was being moved to a new location in the facility.

Details about the incident are still sketchy, but apparently the man was one of two workers on scaffolding when the scanner -- which was being moved from the fourth floor to the first floor -- came loose from a crane and fell to the ground. State and local authorities are investigating the incident.

In other news in MRI, researchers used a deep learning-based reconstruction algorithm to improve the image quality of MRI scans acquired with an accelerated scanning protocol. And researchers from China combined MRI radiomics with clinical variables to predict whether breast cancer patients who are hormone receptor-positive will respond to endocrine therapy.

Predatory radiology journals

The rise of predatory academic journals -- which rely on fees paid by authors to have their work published -- has bedeviled the world of scientific publishing. Researchers are often lured in with flattering emails to publish their work in fly-by-night journals that frequently have titles remarkably similar to established publications.

And radiology is not immune. A recent study found that there are over 60 deceptive journals in radiology from nearly 30 different publishers. Fortunately, researchers published a list of eight clues that can tip you off that you're dealing with a predatory publisher.
