InfiMed begins sales of StingRay DR detectors

SALT LAKE CITY - Digital x-ray firm InfiMed is commercially launching its StingRay DR flat-panel digital detector program at this week’s SCAR meeting. The Liverpool, NY, company hopes to lower the cost of digital x-ray technology by upgrading existing x-ray rooms, rather than selling new systems.

StingRay DR is based on Pixium 4600 amorphous-silicon flat-panel detectors provided by Trixell of Moirans, France. The panel is integrated with high-speed electronics that enable users to acquire digital images in less than 10 seconds. The images can then be sent to a PACS network for review.

InfiMed received clearance for StingRay two years ago, but has spent the interim testing the system in the clinical setting and making modifications. For its part, Trixell has significantly improved the quality of its flat-panel detectors, making them more viable as clinical products.

InfiMed has already carved out a successful niche in the digital fluoroscopy retrofit sector, and hopes to replicate that success in the larger market for static radiography systems. The company believes that many radiology departments would rather retrofit their existing equipment than throw out all of their conventional x-ray units for new digital systems. Nearly all the companies currently selling DR systems are highlighting new units.

StingRay DR will be sold through distributors, with InfiMed performing installation and support. The systems will be priced between $200,000 to $225,000 for a room with a single x-ray panel. The system has undergone clinical trials at the Kirklin Clinic at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center.
