Agfa tapped for nine-hospital PACS in Canada

Agfa HealthCare has contracted to install and service its Impax PACS in nine networked hospitals in northeastern Ontario, Canada. The project, called NORrad, will improve access to specialty care for patients living in rural and remote communities by digitizing and connecting medical image data among the facilities.

NORrad will be the largest regional multisite PACS installation in North America, covering nearly 150,000 square kilometers, and serving community hospitals in Timmins, Hearst, Kapuskasing, Kirkland Lake, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Moose Factory, and Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario, according to Agfa.

Each NORrad hospital will receive a complete Impax system, including computed radiography, digital diagnostic and clinical review workstations, and voice recognition dictation software. The PACS will be connected to all modalities, including x-ray, ultrasound, cardiology, nuclear medicine, CT, and MRI.

Every hospital will also be interconnected via a dedicated broadband ATM network. The Timmins and District Hospital installation will act as the central repository, housing the system’s core archive and database.

The installations will commence in May 2002, with completion of the entire platform expected within five months. Full clinical deployment is scheduled for October 2002.
