Dear PACS Insider,
An enterprise or inter-enterprise archive has much to offer, including improvements in patient care, security, efficiency, and cost savings, according to Jon Copeland, chief information officer of Inland Imaging in Spokane, WA.
While those benefits are appreciated by radiologists, referring physicians, and IT staff, an enterprise archive does come with its own challenges, however. Institutions implementing an enterprise archive must tackle the management of an enterprise master patient index (EMPI), handle complex interfaces, and deal with upgrades that impact many users.
Copeland shared Inland Imaging's experience with an enterprise archive during a talk at the March PACS 2006: Digital Healthcare Information and Management Systems (DHIMS) conference, held in San Antonio and sponsored by the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
