Dear PACS Insider,
DICOM CDs can be a great means for disseminating patient images and information. But they are often plagued by shortcomings that make it difficult for users to view images and integrate the data into PACS networks.
The German Roentgen Society (DRG) felt a quality assurance program was necessary for the CDs, and in 2005 launched an initiative in collaboration with the Oldenburg Research and Development Institute for Information Technology Tools and Systems (OFFIS) in Germany. The program aimed to develop specifications and testing procedures for products, as well as recommendations for users.
The initiative has been a success, with improvements already seen in the marketplace, according to Dr. Peter Mildenberger of the University of Mainz. He discussed the DRG's experience with the initiative during a session at the 2006 RSNA meeting in Chicago.
