The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has begun electronic transmission of digital images for critically injured soldiers transferred from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, and the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda to the Veterans Affairs Polytrauma Center in Tampa, FL.
Previously, images were copied from the local PACS network at Walter Reed or NNMC to a compact disk, which was then hand-carried by the patient or a family member to the VA facility, according to the DoD. The DoD is now working to add this capability to Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, TX, as well as bringing on VA polytrauma centers in Richmond, VA; Minneapolis; and Palo Alto, CA.
