SIIM 2007 eyes future of imaging informatics

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

PROVIDENCE, RI - The 2007 edition of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) opened today with a discussion of the role imaging informatics will play in healthcare in the coming years.

In today's opening session, John P. Glaser, Ph.D., chief information officer at Partners HealthCare System in Boston, explained how imaging informatics technologies are becoming increasingly pervasive throughout the healthcare enterprise.

Glaser discussed how healthcare IT requires a process of continuous improvement. Technology implementation needs to be constantly studied, evaluated, and tweaked to achieve its full potential, he said. As the process evolves, healthcare facilities will find that they can begin leveraging the data collected through IT to develop innovative business processes -- which will ultimately provide better patient care.

Such business processes are more important to a facility's success than technology adoption. As healthcare IT becomes more widely diffused, the mere installation of a new technology becomes less of a differentiating factor between competing sites, Glaser believes.
