Image management firm Heart Imaging Technologies (HeartIT) of Durham, NC, has launched a new Web site designed to enable patients to upload and share their own medical images.
HeartIT said the Web site, WebPAX.com, enables patients to use a standard Web browser to upload, view, and share DICOM images, which normally require specialized viewer software. The company pointed out that patients have a legal right to request copies of their medical images.
HeartIT said that the technology powering WebPAX.com is the same as that used in online banking, and private information such as names and dates are automatically removed from DICOM headers during uploading.
The site offers the ability to upload an unlimited number of scans for free; all scans are stored indefinitely for free, and users can access the most recent 25 scans for free. Users can gain additional features by upgrading to a Pro account for $499 a year.
