AuntMinnie.com PACS Insider

Dear PACS Insider,

More institutions are now deploying off-the-shelf LCD displays around the hospital, thanks to their lower cost. As Web-based image review software has also proliferated, clinicians are increasingly using these displays to review images.

But these types of displays vary widely in performance and require regular calibration, according to research presented at last week's 2009 RSNA meeting in Chicago. A study team from University College Dublin in Ireland found that calibration led to statistically significant improvement in a number of important physical and psychophysical display parameters.

Our coverage of the research is the focus of this PACS Insider edition. You can access the Insider Exclusive before it is published for the rest of our AuntMinnie.com members by clicking here.

In other stories we're featuring so far from the RSNA meeting, a review of medical apps for the iPhone found a lot of value and potential for the technology. In another study, researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore discovered that the iPhone could be used in diagnosing appendicitis from CT scans.
