DICOM protocol expands to pathology

The College of American Pathologists (CAP) has contributed to the expansion of a new DICOM medical image exchange standard for pathology, the college said. The society is a member of the DICOM Standards Committee.

The new standard, called Supplement 145, will allow for electronic display, sharing, storage, and management of microscope slide images, or large images usually associated with pathology, according to CAP. It will also give pathology professionals additional flexibility, such as panning and zooming, when interacting with images.

Most hospitals use a PACS to manage and store radiology images, and PACS software and the DICOM core standard do not accommodate pathology whole-slide images. DICOM Supplement 145 will facilitate the exchange of pathology medical images and their incorporation into electronic health records (EHRs), CAP said.
