KLAS: Telerad consolidation means opportunity

Consolidation in the teleradiology market over the past year has produced new growth and service opportunities for vendors, according to a new market study from healthcare technology research firm KLAS.

The report cited Virtual Radiologic's acquisition of NightHawk last year, which affected the largest customer base of teleradiology, as the primary reason for the consolidation.

Many NightHawk customers have reported challenges with report turnaround times, and reading physicians have struggled with the transition to Virtual Radiologic's technology since the acquisition, wrote study author Emily Crane, director of teleradiology research at KLAS.

Those market factors could open doors for smaller vendors, such as StatRad and Onrad, two regional teleradiology services based in California. Colorado-based Rays, formerly NightRays, also has gained some business outside of its core Southeast region with customers in every region of the U.S., according to the report.
