Carestream Health said it has reduced its air emissions and energy consumption as part of an ongoing effort to trim its environmental footprint.
To decrease air emissions, Carestream invested in technology that reduces volatile organic compounds that can contribute to ground-level smog and air pollutants. The company's manufacturing plant in Rochester, NY, has reduced emissions by more than 80% by installing an air emission control device that heats and destroys pollutants, according to the firm.
The company has also achieved a 50% reduction in energy use over the past four years by replacing selected heating and cooling systems with high-efficiency units, creating programs to turn off equipment when it's not needed, and replacing inefficient lighting, Carestream said.
In an effort to control hazardous waste from product manufacturing, Carestream's Colorado and Oregon manufacturing plants capture solvents that can be reused or recovered and sold for other uses. The Oregon facility has eliminated the need to purchase 240,000 gallons of solvent a year due to better recovery and reuse practices, according to the company.
