Dear PACS Insider,
Health systems face the double whammy of managing growth in both imaging procedure volume and the size of the average imaging study. But PACS archives can be managed at near-zero growth if rules-based image deletion policies are implemented, according to a team from Catholic health system Ascension Health.
In a presentation at the recent RSNA meeting in Chicago, Carol Joseph shared how these new policies are expected to help Ascension avoid millions in storage and future migration costs. Get all the details of her talk in this edition's Insider Exclusive, which you can access before our regular members.
In other articles from RSNA, PACS consultant Michael J. Cannavo has doled out his always-entertaining PACSman Awards. Who were the lucky recipients from this year's show? Click here to find out. Prior to the meeting, Mr. Cannavo also shared his guidance for performing PACS evaluations at RSNA in the latest edition of his Straight Talk From the PACSman.
In addition, researchers from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration determined that viewing angle affects spatial resolution in mobile viewing; the results complement an earlier study that found that ambient lighting degrades image quality on mobile devices.
Stay tuned to the PACS Digital Community in the coming weeks for more coverage from RSNA 2013.
In other news, a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee recently debated a new approach to regulating mobile medical apps. If implemented, the change could affect imaging software. Get the details here.
A Japanese research team has found that radiologists can help ward off fatigue during long image reading sessions by wearing contact lenses instead of glasses, brightening up the reading room, and viewing images on the right type of monitor. What else can be done? Click here to find out.
