Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have found that an open-source application designed mainly to assist in software development could be repurposed to facilitate radiology workflow management.

Working from the hypothesis that workflows within a radiology practice are fundamentally similar to those outside of radiology, the researchers adapted an open-source Web-based application called Redmine to function within the institution's academic radiology department, said presenter Dr. Nathaniel Swinburne.

"In our implementation of Redmine, the tool functions as both a workflow management tool -- enabling, for example, users to provide colleagues with feedback and updates about a study -- and as a dynamic, crowd-sourced teaching file," Swinburne told AuntMinnie.com.

Based on their results, the researchers concluded that applications designed for nonmedical purposes can be successfully adapted for use within a radiology practice, Swinburne said.

Hear all about their experience during this Wednesday afternoon session.
