Deconstructed vs. reconstructed PACS; radiation protection in the UAE; CT lung screening

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

One of the hottest topics in imaging informatics over the past year is deconstructed PACS -- the idea that customers will get better performance and price if they separately acquire PACS components such as vendor-neutral archives and enterprise image viewers, rather than purchase everything from a single vendor.

But PACS vendors aren't taking this approach lying down. The concept of the single-vendor PACS has been reconstructed, only this time with more flexible technology that's better suited to the era of enterprise imaging. Such an approach is also winning attention as a simpler alternative to deconstructed PACS.

So which approach is best: deconstructed or reconstructed PACS? We raise that issue in our Imaging Informatics Community in a pair of point-counterpoint articles by two industry opinion leaders, Dr. Nick van Terheyden of Dell Healthcare and Menashe Benjamin, PhD, of Carestream Health. Check both of them out by clicking here.

Radiation protection in the UAE

A world away (from AuntMinnie.com's editorial headquarters in San Francisco, at least), the Arab Health meeting is just wrapping up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Contributing writer Inga Stevens has been on hand to report for our AuntMinnie Middle East special section.

Today we're featuring her coverage of a talk on what the UAE is doing to increase radiation awareness. The country is striving to align its own national radiation protection program with initiatives from international groups such as the World Health Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency, as well as recent programs like the Bonn Call for Action.

Learn how they are progressing by clicking here, or visit AuntMinnie Middle East at middleeast.auntminnie.com.

CT lung screening

Finally, we bring you research published this week in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology that supports broader CT lung cancer screening guidelines. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic found that screening was effective in a group of individuals who quit smoking more than 15 years ago -- outside guidelines currently being followed at most screening sites. Get the rest of the story by clicking here.
