Faced with pricing pressures in its core drug distribution business, McKesson is considering the separation of its healthcare IT unit, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
The company is mulling over options that could include a sale or merger for the Technology Solutions unit, but it's unclear whether a deal would include the entire IT business or if an agreement would even be completed at all, according to the article.
McKesson's Technology Solutions business had $2.9 billion in sales in its most recent fiscal year (end-March 31) and operating profit of $519 million, which is just a fraction of the $188 billion in sales and $3.6 billion in operating profit produced by McKesson's drug distribution business.
