AuntMinnie.com Imaging Informatics Insider

Dear Imaging Informatics Insider,

Not surprisingly, developments in artificial intelligence (AI) headlined a presentation on the most important recent advances in imaging informatics at the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) annual meeting last week in Denver.

In their talk at SIIM 2019, William Hsu, PhD, of the University of California, Los Angeles and Dr. Po-Hao "Howard" Chen of the Cleveland Clinic reviewed recent research on AI-powered image enhancement, "explainable AI," and natural language processing. What else is on their list? Check out this edition's Insider Exclusive to find out.

You'll also want to see our video interview with Dr. Chen at the meeting.

In addition, we chatted in Denver with consultant Herman Oosterwijk on enterprise imaging; Dr. Charles Kahn on safe, effective, and humane AI; and SIIM Chair Dr. Jim Whitfill on AI, enterprise imaging, and patient engagement.

Researchers at SIIM 2019 also found that a computer-assisted reporting tool could distinguish between benign and malignant lung nodules on CT exams.

Despite widespread efforts over the years to provide image sharing via other means, CDs unfortunately remain the primary medium for providing patients with copies of their imaging studies, according to a team of researchers led by Carolyn Lee of Yale University School of Medicine. After surveying 80 highly ranked hospitals in the U.S., the researchers found that only six could provide patients with imaging studies over email. And even fewer offered access via a patient portal.

We also have the latest two articles in our series on the value of certified imaging informatics professionals (CIIPs), contributed by Luke Bideaux of Vega Imaging Informatics. In part 3, Bideaux reveals how a CIIP's ability to support radiologists can yield improved outcomes. Part 4 focuses on how a CIIP's proficiency in solving interoperability challenges can pay off big for health imaging practices.

Electronic medical record software can provide both benefits and challenges for workflow at MRI facilities, according to a recent presentation at the Society for MR Radiographers & Technologists annual meeting.
