Launched in 2014, the WFPI teleradiology service provides pro-bono second opinions to health facilities in low- and middle-income countries that have limited access to pediatric radiology expertise. From October 2014 to October 2018, 45 volunteer pediatric radiologists reviewed 668 cases from five continents, according to the researchers.
Further analysis showed that the median delay between receiving the case to the first radiologist response was 5.53 hours.
"The platform is still up and running and going strong now with almost 800 cases [read]," presenter Dr. Hansel Otero of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia told AuntMinnie.com. "We still believe that it provides a solution for places with access to imaging but lacking pediatric radiology expertise."
Feedback from referrers has been overwhelmingly positive, according to the researchers.
"We are, in fact, adding new sites as some of the initial sites require less support and the experts are in constant rotation as people might become less available due to changes in life and/or work," Otero said.
