Philips Medical Systems will have a new leader. Dutch parent Royal Philips Electronics has appointed Jouko Karvinen as president and CEO of Philips Medical Systems, effective October 1.
Karvinen is currently executive vice president at ABB Group, heading up the Zurich, Switzerland-based conglomerate's automation technology products division. He will replace Hans Barella at Philips, who will retire on October 1. Karvinen will join Philips on June 1.
Barella has presided over a period of rapid expansion for Philips, including its blockbuster acquisitions of ADAC Laboratories, ATL Ultrasound, the Healthcare Solutions Group of Agilent Technologies, and Marconi Medical Systems. He served as president and CEO since 1997.
