The provincial government of Alberta, Canada, has ordered a review of all diagnostic imaging and pathology testing in the province after errors surfaced at three separate hospitals since November, according to an article published in the Globe and Mail.
Health and Wellness Minister Fred Horne said that the review was prompted by a rash of botched medical tests in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Newfoundland and Labrador, according to the article.
The decision came after a single patient at Drumheller Hospital in central Alberta complained about a sudden change in treatment after receiving x-ray results. The situation spawned a review of 249 CT, ultrasound, and x-ray exams interpreted by one particular radiologist. Errors of "considerable concern" were detected in CT scans of 34 patients, and the review was expanded to 1,300 CT scans, the Globe and Mail reported.
