Medical practices in the U.S. have reported an increase in regulatory burden, and COVID-19 challenges further compound the problem, according to the 2021 Annual Regulatory Burden Report from the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA).
Of the responses from 420 medical group practices, 91% reported that the overall regulatory burden on their practices has risen during the past 12 months. Prior authorization requirements again ranked as the top burden for medical practices with Medicare's Quality Payment Program (QPP) and COVID-19 workplace mandates tying for second, according to the results.
If regulatory burdens were reduced, 95% of respondents reported that their practices could reallocate resources for patient care, according to the results.
MGMA's government affairs team uses this data to inform U.S. lawmakers and the administration about the obstacles that medical practices face.
