Film and PACS vendor Agfa is planning to close its x-ray film manufacturing plant in Brevard, NC. The Ridgefield Park, NJ, company said it will consolidate the Brevard plant’s operations with those of its Bushy Park, SC, facility.
Agfa said the Brevard plant manufactures aqueous-coated x-ray film, while the North American market is shifting to solvent-coated hard-copy media. Retooling the plant for solvent-coated media would have been too costly, according to the company. About 400 people were employed at the Brevard factory, which will shut down by the end of 2002.
The consolidation is part of Agfa’s Horizon efficiency plan, which the firm announced last year as a way to cut costs throughout the company. Facilities in Germany, Spain, Belgium, and the U.K. have also been closed under the Horizon plan.
