Overburdened RTs fear for personal, patient safety

Personnel shortages are a direct threat to a radiologic technologist’s (RT) occupational safety, according to the results of a survey by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists.

Of those 2,900 surveyed, 80% of hospital-based RTs said that a lack of manpower compromised their safety because of heavier workloads, longer shifts, ergonomic injuries, and additional exposure to radiation. Overworked staff can be a danger to patient safety, the respondents said. RTs who work in clinics, imaging centers, or private practice did not feel the same degree of pressure, according to the results.

ASRT President Allen Terrell suggested that employers consider hiring RT aides to assist with non-technical duties and to implement formal safety programs.
