GE reports record revenue, earnings

General Electric reported second-quarter revenues of $32.9 billion, up 20% from the $27.4 billion posted in the same period last year. The Fairfield, CT-based company had net income of $3.4 billion for the period (end-June 30), compared with net income of $2.8 billion in 1999.

Strong results were also reported for segments in the company’s GE Medical Systems division. X-ray orders were up 96%, driven by the vendor's 1999 acquisition of OEC Medical Systems and the introduction of the Innova 2000 digital cardiac imaging system and the Senographe 2000D full-field digital mammography unit.

Waukesha, WI-based GEMS also reported 35% growth in CT scales, sparked by strong market demand for its LightSpeed multislice scanner. Ultrasound orders also climbed 40%, including 65% growth in the company's Americas region.

In other GEMS news, the company has dedicated a new facility at its headquarters to meet growing market demand for refurbished equipment by Gold Seal, which remarkets both GE and non-GE diagnostic imaging equipment around the world.
