Professional pre-registration for this month's RSNA meeting is down 8% compared with last year's, according to the society. The number of vendor attendees declined by 19%, a phenomenon more likely attributable to the economic environment and industry consolidation than to the events of September 11, said Steve Drew, assistant executive director of the scientific assembly and informatics for the RSNA, of Oak Brook, IL.
"For the first time, we're seeing companies having their staff double up in hotel rooms," Drew told AuntMinnie.com.
Pre-registration closed October 26. While presentation cancellations are up 200% to 177 as of November 14, the RSNA has filled in virtually all of the gaps with substitutes, Drew said. The RSNA will also be adding presentations on hot topics.
The society is still hopeful that meeting attendance will reach the 50,000 mark, down from initial expectations of 60,000. Several medical conventions held after September 11 have reported higher-than-usual on-site registrations, and the society is keeping its fingers crossed for similar results, Drew said.
