The American College of Radiology (ACR) has named three winners of its highest award, the Gold Medal, at its annual meeting in Washington, DC.
The award acknowledges distinguished and extraordinary service to the college or to the discipline of radiology, according to the ACR. The recipients are as follows:
- Dr. Walter Curran Jr. of Emory University in Atlanta. Curran is executive director at Emory's Winship Cancer Institute and chair of the university's department of radiation oncology. He was the first radiation oncologist to serve as director of a U.S. National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, the ACR said.
- Dr. Lawrence Davis of North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY, and Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY. Davis has served as the ACR's vice president and chair of its Commission on Education, as well as chair of the Radiology Residency Review Committee and president of the Association of Program Directors in Radiology.
- Dr. Charles Williams of Capital Regional Medical Center and Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare Hospital, both in Tallahassee, FL. He specializes in pediatric radiology and breast imaging and has served in nearly 50 commission and committee positions in the ACR.
The ACR also named two honorary fellows: Dr. Peter Hoskin from University College London and Dr. Christoph Laurenz Zollikofer from Kantonsspital Baden in Switzerland. Finally, the organization recognized Mary Jane Donahue of Cary, NC, with a distinguished achievement award. Donahue has served 27 years at the ACR.
