The American Society of Radiologic Technologists has laid out 11 specific goals it hopes to achieve over the next three years. Four of them are priorities, according to ASRT president Michael DelVecchio.
The ASRT will advocate workforce development by giving R.T.s the knowledge, resources, and support they need to provide high-quality patient care, according to the Albuquerque-based society.
To achieve its most important goals, the ASRT plans to:
- Roll out the organization's Education Master Plan.
- Lobby vigorously for the establishment of federal minimum standards.
- Combat the ongoing personnel shortage.
- Explore clinical advancement opportunities for R.T.s.
The Education Master Plan will address educational issues facing the profession, ranging from entry-level standards to advanced practice.
The ASRT said it will use technology, both externally and internally, to improve its performance, enhance customer satisfaction, and offer value-added service to members. It will then work to diversify and expand its revenue base by developing new products for new customers, both in the U.S. and internationally, according to CEO Lynn May.
In other goals, the ASRT will work to:
- Develop and serve a diverse customer base.
- Leverage its membership base of more than 87,000.
- Operate ASRT using strategic planning, continuous improvement, and leadership development.
- Develop alliances with other organizations to achieve the ASRT’s vision.
- Create a global resource for medical imaging and radiation therapy.
- Reduce barriers to growth of the profession.
- Advocate workplace reform through continuous improvement in medical imaging and radiation therapy.
Finally, the society announced its funding of "X is for X-Ray", a 1,500-square-foot exhibit developed by the National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque to provide an interactive tour of the history of medical imaging. An ASRT grant is helping to fund the exhibit as it travels to schools, hospitals, and museums nationwide.
