The personnel shortage in radiologic technology may be a boon for working RTs, who are enjoying strong wage growth, according to a survey by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists in Albuquerque, NM. Since 1997, RTs have seen a 20% increase in pay, from $17.02 per hour to $21.26 per hour.
The survey was conducted in January 2001 and sent to 29,914 RTs, sonographers, and nuclear medicine technologists in the U.S. The response rate was 42%.
The survey also showed that medical dosimetrists earn the highest wage, at $28.02 per hour. The entry-level wage for radiographers averages $16.26 per hour. The highest-paid RTs are in Arizona, California, and Nevada. The lowest-paid technologists work in Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
Finally, technologists without a graduate-level degree earn an average of $20.46 an hour, while those with master’s degrees earn $6.92 more per hour. Those with master’s degrees also generally hold management or educator positions, according to the survey results.
