RTs must prove retired status with ARRT

The American Registry of RadiologicTechnologists has implemented new registration rules for retired radiologic technologists. Beginning in July 2002, retired RTs will be required to complete an application to declare retired status, along with a form for registration renewal. RTs who have permanently left the profession are no longer required to comply with the organization’s continuing education requirements.

RTs who consider themselves retired, but still work in some capacity, will be asked to provide the ARRT with a job description for review. The new regulation was devised after RTs were found to be declaring themselves retired in order to avoid obtaining CE requirements, but were still continuing to provide medical imaging services, according to ARRT of Albuquerque, NM.

"Retired status of registration is very tightly defined as permanently leaving the practice of radiologic technology," the ARRT stated. "It is a violation of the ARRT standards of ethics to be employed in the profession under the retired status."
