During this session, early results will be presented of an ongoing pilot study comparing dynamic digital radiography (DDR) with perfusion assessment and CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) in evaluating suspected pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE).
Anmol Dhawan, MD, a senior radiology resident at Bharati Hospital Pune in Pune, India, will discuss the results from 24 patients who underwent both studies to rule out PTE. The researchers analyzed differences in the two approaches in quantifying the percentage of total perfusion between both lungs and correlated findings with the presence or absence of thromboembolism.
“In the interim analysis of our study, we have found a greater mean difference in inter-lung perfusion in patients with PTE (21%) than in patients without PTE (13%). However, a larger sample size is required to determine true statistical significance,” Dhawan noted.
While CTPA remains the gold standard for evaluating these patients, the use of DDR appears promising in circumstances precluding the use of CTPA, with additional benefits including limiting exposure to ionizing radiation and iodinated contrast, according to the group.
