FDG-PET/CT points to cervical cancer patient outcomes
February 13, 2020 -- Several indicators on pretreatment FDG-PET/CT scans can help predict overall survival in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer and para-aortic lymph node involvement. The markers could help clinicians steer patients toward more aggressive treatment, according to a February 7 study in Journal of Nuclear Medicine.  Discuss
PET shows cardiac meds may reduce beta-amyloid buildup
February 12, 2020 -- Patients who were on cardiovascular medications like cholesterol-lowering drugs seem to have lower levels of amyloid burden on PET scans, according to a study published February 7 in JAMA Network Open. The question is whether these findings indicate the individuals are at lower risk for Alzheimer's disease.  Discuss
FDG-PET shows where exercise could stall Alzheimer's
February 6, 2020 -- People with sedentary lifestyles who exercised regularly over several months showed increased brain glucose metabolism on FDG-PET in one brain region associated with the early onset of dementia or Alzheimer's disease, according to a study published online February 3 in Brain Plasticity.  Discuss
Amyloid-PET advocates take their case to Congress
January 30, 2020 -- Proponents of a bill pending in the U.S. Congress that would ensure adequate reimbursement for diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals for use with PET to diagnose Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions took their cause to the nation's capital on January 29.  Discuss
Biomarkers on PET, MRI show breast cancer risk
January 23, 2020 -- In a finding they described as "unexpected," researchers used PET and MRI to discover that women with a malignant tumor in one breast have lower levels of certain biomarkers in the contralateral, healthy breast. Results were published in the January edition of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine.  Discuss
Unique PET/CT video shows real-time blood, cardiac motion
January 22, 2020 -- U.S. and Chinese researchers have combined an advanced image reconstruction method with a total-body PET scanner to track real-time blood flow and heart and respiratory function, according to a study published online January 20 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.  Discuss
Report: Fujifilm makes pitch for Curium Pharma
January 16, 2020 -- In what would be its latest deal in an ongoing acquisition spree in healthcare, Fujifilm has made an offer to buy French radiopharmaceutical developer Curium Pharma in a transaction that could be valued as high as $3 billion, according to a January 14 report from Bloomberg.  Discuss
Cu-64 DOTATATE PET could handle neuroendocrine tumors
January 15, 2020 -- PET imaging with copper-64 (Cu-64) DOTATATE could become a lower-radiation dose option for patients with suspected neuroendocrine tumors, according to the results of a phase III clinical trial published online January 10 in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine.  Discuss
Flortaucipir-PET shows moderate promise for CTE
January 7, 2020 -- PET imaging with flortaucipir revealed uptake patterns indicative of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in a new study published online January 6 in JAMA Neurology, but the tau-binding radiotracer is not quite ready to be declared a reliable biomarker for the condition, the authors noted.  Discuss
PET shows tau better predicts brain atrophy than amyloid
January 3, 2020 -- PET scans comparing the location and magnitude of tau protein accumulation have shown that tau better predicts future brain atrophy in patients with Alzheimer's disease compared with amyloid deposition -- and a year or more in advance, according to a study published online January 1 in Science Translational Medicine.  Discuss
